Synopsis
In the late spring sunset, the gradually slanting sunlight shines on the tunnel wall. People leisurely come and go. Their figures fade out into solid black shadows, their contours becoming blurred. Two moments of disturbance occur in front of a happy man. The film was shot at Promontory Point in Chicago.
More on My Mind
The film was completed during an independent study
period with Pope. L. It is a film that welcomes intruders. I occasionally reminisce about this film and
some of the thoughts I had at the time seem naive and silly. I once said I wanted no manipulation in this
film other than cuts. I wanted to stay loyal. But loyal to what? To the location where the film was shot,
Promontory Point in Hyde Park? To the medium of film itself? To the season? To the people who
appeared in the film? That spring, I felt like a rigid purist. Until one day, standing in the middle of the
tunnel, I filmed a 30-minute one-take with people passing by under the sunset and slanting shadows, their
silhouettes gradually blurring. In the same week, one evening, I came to the same tunnel, with my camera
facing the opposite direction, waiting for something to happen, waiting for people to appear. At 11:06pm,
a Chicago police car drove into the tunnel. That concludes the ending of this film.
